Depth of Field: Learn More About Our World Through the Camera Lens

In a 2018 talk at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei explained how photography has shaped the way he sees the world. “Photo functions more or less like a memory or a note,” Weiwei said, “which may suddenly wake you up.”

This series of Forum Network lectures explores how photography — from Weiwei’s stills documenting life in modern Beijing, to a visual library of “the oldest living things in the world” — can bring us closer to people, things and ideas in places we may never get a chance to visit.

Hear from former White House photographers about what it’s like to document the life of a president; learn how photos of a community in Worcester helped build a new identity for Black Americans in the 20th century; and join experts in considering the way technology like social media and drones will help the photography field continue to reach new audiences in the future.
