Dr. Luana Marques, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, said that one indicator of anxiety is when you start to have trouble focusing. “Your sleep is disrupted and the stuff that you could do easier, it’s taking a lot more effort,” she explained, identifying signs of stress during a virtual GBH event on health in the time of Covid-19. Dr. Marques emphasized just how crucial it is to care for our mental stability — at all times — but especially during sustained high stress situations. So how do we best navigate high stress environments and support those who may be struggling?
Here is a series of book talks, lectures and panel discussions that offer research and advice on maintaining our mental health, from therapeutic practices to how to manage stress at work. These conversations provide resources for a range of experiences, including talks that identify risk factors for depression, that highlight the role of identity — like race and gender — in mental healthcare, and that consider ways to improve connections for those who may be lonely or isolated.
This series provides educational resources for a better understanding of mental health issues. If you think you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please reach out to your local crisis hotline.
