Enjoy a conversation with ornthithologist David Allen Sibley, author and illustrator of the Sibley Guides birding books. WGBH’s Arun Rath, an avid birdwatcher, along with WGBH News reporter Craig LeMoult conduct the interview and moderate audience questions.

David has been a birdwatcher most of his life. He explores nature through drawing and painting the world around us. During this interview, we hope that you will be inspired to explore nature, while social distancing, and make new discoveries.

+ BIO: Mark Faherty

Mark Faherty has been the Science Coordinator at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary since August 2007 and has led birding trips for Mass Audubon since 2002. While his current projects involve everything from oysters and horseshoe crabs to bats and butterflies, he has studied primarily bird ecology for the last 20 years, working on research projects in Kenya, Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest. He was a counter for the famous River of Raptors hawk watch in Veracruz, Mexico, and has birded extensively in Peru, Kenya, Panama, Belize, and both Eastern and Western Europe.

Mark is an emcee and trip leader for multiple birding festivals and leads workshops on birding by ear, eBird, birding apps, and general bird identification. He is past president of the Cape Cod Bird Club and current member of the Massachusetts Avian Records Committee. Weekly Bird Report, Mark’s weekly essay on Cape and Islands bird life, airs each Wednesday on WCAI, the Cape and Islands NPR station. He also co-hosts Bird News, a monthly call-in show all about birds, on WCAI’s The Point with Mindy Todd.

David Sibley is an author and illustrator of the Sibley Guides and other books about birds and nature. He’s been an avid birdwatcher for most of my life, with drawing and painting as a way of exploring nature.

He’s also the author of The Birds of Cape May, The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior, The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America, The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America, Hawks in Flight, and Sibley’s Birding Basics. All together he has sold more than 1.75 million copies of his books. Sibley creates all his work from his home in Concord, Massachusetts.

Craig LeMoult produces sound­-rich features and breaking news coverage for WGBH News. He has won a number of awards for his reporting, including two 2015 national Edward R. Murrow Awards and a 2011 Sigma Delta Chi award from the national Society of Professional Journalists. He is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Tufts University. + BIO: Arun Rath

Arun Rath is the producer and host of PBS Frontline’s new audio podcast, and is developing radio segments for Frontline. Arun started his career in radio at NPR. He was the director of NPR’s daily news show “Talk of the Nation” before moving to New York in 2000 to take over as senior producer of NPR’s “On the Media.” He oversaw the re-launch of the show with new hosts Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield, and during his tenure the program tripled its audience and won a number of awards, including a Peabody for its 2004 election coverage. In 2005, Rath spent a year as the senior editor of Public Radio International’s culture and arts program Studio 360, before being lured to television by PBS’s Frontline. Arun has reported and produced three films for Frontline, the latest being an investigation of alleged war crimes committed by US Marines in Haditha, Iraq, which was just nominated for an Emmy. In addition to his behind-the-scenes work as a producer, Arun has also appeared on camera as a reporter for Frontline/World, and as an on air reporter and host for various public radio programs, including On the Media and WNYC’s live music show, Soundcheck. And starting this summer, he will appear as a regular correspondent on a new PBS series about world music, Sound Tracks.
