Women’s Voices and Visions on Film

March 28, 2009
Melissa Silverstein writer, blogger, Women and Hollywood
Deborah Kampmeier director, screenwriter
Emily Abt director, producer
Thato Rantao Mwosa filmmaker, program coordinator, Women in Film and Video New England

Melissa Silverstein, Deborah Kampmeier, Emily Abt, and Thato Rantao Mwosa discuss statistics from the Center for the Study of Women in TV and Film stating that in 2008, only 9% of the top grossing films were directed by women. Are the types of films that women are drawn to work on just not commercial? Is there an industry-wide lack of confidence in a woman's ability to lead a mostly male team? Or is it this cause by the same difficulties that women who are mothers face in many other industries? This panel argues that women's voices are vital to film, and explores how women can become a bigger part of this cultural conversation.

Special thanks to Cambridge Community Television for producing and contributing this video.
