Using Technology to Help Protect the North Atlantic Right Whale

November 20, 2008
Kerry Lagueux associate scientist, New England Aquarium

Kerry Lagueux describes how the New England Aquarium's research department is employing mapping technology to help understand the patterns of risk for the North Atlantic right whale. This species of large whale is one of the most endangered in the world, with fewer than 400 individuals in the population.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is being used to visualize patterns of right whale distribution, analyze potential conflicts with humans, and assess the compliance of current regulations to protect this species.
