Study in Ecology: Decline of the Sugar Maple

March 20, 2002
Richard Hallett research ecologist, USDA Forest Service
Scott Bailey research geologist, USDA Forest Service

Richard Hallett and Scott Bailey examine the unusually high mortality rate of sugar maple as a means of illuminating broader issues affecting Northeastern US forests.

During the last decade, scientists have noted symptoms of widespread forest decline in Europe and North America. In Northeastern US forests, the decline is especially evident among red spruce and sugar maple. What's happening to these species? Is it a local phenomenon, or is the decline indicative of larger, regional scale, disturbances?
