Lead, Health, Environment: Old Problem and New Challenges

October 1, 2007
Mark Pokras director, wildlife clinic, Tufts Veterinary School

Mark Pokras discusses health and environmental problems associated with lead and why a broad, ecological vision is important in finding solutions.

Conservation medicine examines the linkages among the health of people, animals and the environment. Few issues illustrate this approach better than an examination of the toxic effects of lead. Over the past half-century, western societies have eliminated or greatly reduced many of the traditional uses of lead. Despite this, a huge amount of this toxic metal is still put into terrestrial, aquatic and marine environments.
