Incidental Capture of Sharks in High Seas Fisheries
May 15, 2008
John Mandelman research scientist, NEAQ
John Mandelman discusses whether incidental capture of sharks represents as monumental a threat to shark populations as purposeful capture does.
Whether as unintended catch or through inflicted damage of target catch, bait and fishing gear, sharks are commonly encountered by worldwide fishing operations targeting tuna and swordfish. Mandelman discusses research by New England Aquarium scientists surrounding the question of the threat of incidental capture versus the threat of purposeful capture (for example, for their fins).
