Rana Mitter, professor of Chinese Studies at Oxford University, provides a rough sketch of the events of the Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945) and illustrates its human cost as glimpsed in the firsthand accounts of Chinese journalist Du Zhongyuan. Mitter also discusses the relevance of that conflict in understanding modern Chinese politics.
