Conor James Walsh: Robotical Surgical Aids

October 7, 2005
Conor James Walsh medical device inventor, MIT

Conor James Walsh's discusses his objective at MIT to develop practical engineering technologies that assist humanity directly, including high-tech medical devices for doctors to improve patient care, assistive devices that augment the physical ability of humans, and low-tech solutions to problems in the developing world. Currently, Walsh is part of a team working on developing a robotic surgical aid for doctors performing minimally invasive procedures. The Robopsy prototype consists of a lightweight, disposable plastic structure that both holds and manipulates a biopsy needle.

His team consists of two other students, Nevan Hanumra from MIT and Steven Barrett from Cambridge University. The team is advised by Professor Alex Slocum from the mechanical engineering department at MIT and Rajiv Gupta from the radioology department at Mass General Hospital.
