This year's awards recognize the recipients' efforts to improve election integrity, specifically focusing on flaws in electronic voting technology.
Remarks are made by Paul G. Kirk, Jr., Chairman, Kennedy Library Foundation Board of Directors and Al Hunt, Executive Editor of Bloomberg News and Chairman, Profile in Courage Award Committee. Speeches are also made by the award recipients: Debra Bowen, Secretary of State of California, and Jennifer Brunner, Secretary of State of Ohio.
A special lifetime achievement award is presented to former Mississippi Governor William Winter, recognizing his extraordinary leadership in championing educational opportunity and racial equality for generations of Mississippi citizens. A special award is presented to student Laura Schapiro, for writing this year's winning Profiles In Courage student essay.
