October 9, 2009
Dava J. Newman professor, Aeronautics and Astronautics, MIT
Mel Chin artist
Ann Hamilton professor, art, Ohio State University
Jeremy Liu artist, former director, Asian Community Development Corporation
Barbara Schaffer Bacon co-director, Animating Democracy
Carrie Lambert-Beatty professor, history of art and architecture, Harvard

Carrie Lambert-Beatty moderates a discussion on the negotiation between "art of protest" and "art of policy" with several of the most experienced and compelling voices in the field of contemporary creative practices: Ann Hamilton, Dava Newman, Mel Chin, Barbara Schaffer Bacon, and Jeremy Liu.

In organizing this event, Artists in Context hopes to inspire new ideas, fresh connections, and generative discussion concerning the evolving role of art and artists in revealing the political, economic, and social problems of our time.

By joining speakers from the arts, science, policy, and community realms, they demonstrate the necessary interconnectedness, risk, and crossing of boundaries that not only define the contemporary moment, but also open up new opportunities for cooperation and transformation.
